Hand-Painted Levi’s Baton Shirt | Sz. Kids 12 / Adult XS | c. 1970s
Details
An astonishing example of mid-century Americana, this custom Levi’s shirt was likely commissioned for a young performer in a baton twirling or gymnastics team — and no detail was spared. Hand-painted with vibrant 1960s-style girl figures, retro typography, and emblems that radiate small-town pageantry pride, it’s a true wearable artifact.
Painted with phrases like “Calico Kids,” “Gingham Girls,” and “Jumbling Texans,” the shirt commemorates a team of "Featurettes" — complete with gymnasts, baton twirlers, and personalized names and initials (like Sherri and Marilyn Daugherty). A.A.U. championship graphics, a shield crest, hearts, and bold Gothic lettering elevate it into full novelty-heritage territory. It's made from soft chambray-like cotton-poly with classic Levi’s tailoring: pointed collar, orange stitching, and black shank buttons.
Likely created in Texas around the late 1960s to early 1970s, this piece was clearly cherished — and miraculously preserved. The artwork remains bright and intact with no visible cracking or flaking. Collectible, expressive, and highly displayable.
