J.L. Mathieu’s Cough Syrup Wall Vase | 8.25” x 5.5” | c. 1890s–1910s
Details
An authentic, aqua-tinted glass medicine bottle from the turn of the century, mounted on lightly finished pine with hand-shaped copper strapping and brass screws. Embossed in crisp block lettering: "J.L. Mathieu’s Cough Syrup, Marlboro, Mass"
This early 1900s apothecary bottle bears all the charm of a locally distributed patent medicine from New England’s golden age of pharmacy. The glass is thick, subtly iridescent, and hand-blown into a mold, evidenced by its telltale air bubbles and irregularities.
Mounted vertically to a blonde pine board, the soft blue-green of the glass contrasts beautifully with the copper and wood tones. This piece functions well as a bud vase, dried flower holder, or simply as a decorative object - a unique fusion of rustic Americana and pharmaceutical history.
